Wang Gongquan. Successful Chinese investor. Famous billionaire.
His June 16 post on Sina Weibo, the popular Twitter-like web-messaging service in China was re-posted by more than 60,000 Weibo users and received over 30,000 comments.
Was it investing advice for the masses? No. Did he share his top stock picks? Not quite.
He did post confidential information, and did announce his top pick. But it was the unfortunate news (to his wife) that he was leaving her for his mistress. Here’s what he posted
:
“I am giving up everything and eloping with Wang Qin. I feel ashamed and so am leaving without saying goodbye. I kneel down and beg forgiveness!”
According to Loretta Chao and Josh Chin of The Wall Street Journal, “Other bigwigs felt compelled to weigh in. ‘Please get in touch with me as soon as possible!’ Mr. Wang’s friend, Pan Shiyi, the billionaire chairman of Soho China Ltd., one of Beijing’s biggest real-estate developers, wrote to him on Weibo. ‘Your family is incredibly anxious…Please contact them.’”
Can’t imagine why the family is anxious. The coward posted his intentions (and shared the shame he was feeling) with his wife and thousands of others on Weibo. When he has more to say on the matter, he’ll post more on Sina Weibo.

What do you think of Wang’s decision to use social media to inform his wife that he was leaving her? Is this a reasonable way to communicate a major development or change in a relationship? Have you heard about or experienced a relationships break up or received new news about your relationship via social media?
